Women enjoy a high esteem and respect in an Islamic state. Islam has given a huge importance to women in every role; as a mother, sister, wife and daughter. The ranks of mother are as high as the paradise in the skies. Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the glad tidings to the believers that “Paradise lies under the feet of a mother”. What a wonderful opportunity for us to enter into Heaven by obeying and serving our mothers.

Islam being the complete code of conduct has clearly identified both rights and duties of women in every role. Let us have a look at some of the important aspects in this regard.

Rights of Women:

Unfortunately, women of today are not fully aware of their rights given to them more than 1400 years ago by the most justice religion, Islam. If these rights are truly ensured to them, they would neither get victimized nor buried alive. Following are the rights of women in an Islamic state:

Security and Honor

Islamic teachings impose certain duties on men in regards to the respect and security of women. Islam asks men not only to provide food, clothing and shelter to their wives but also to respect their self-esteem. Islam gives a distinct identity to women in the society. It guarantees the security of women and it is the duty of every person to protect women through their actions, words and kind behavior rather disrespect and molest them.

The honor of a woman in the capacity of a daughter even is raised so high that Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave good news to those raising two and more daughters to be with Him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the day of resurrection. In the Last Sermon, Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) warned men to fear Allah Almighty concerning their women. How much Islam cares about the security and honor of women, is a clear proof of its supremacy.

Right of Inheritance

Before Islam, women were not allowed to share in the inherited property of their fathers, brothers or husbands. Islam introduced the rights of inherited property for women. Holy Quran mentions this in much detail as to what should be a woman’s share as a daughter, sister and wife. It secures the social and economic status of women in an Islamic state. A women has a certain share in the property of her parents and husband which is a right only awarded by Islam.

Right of Education

Islam is a practical religion that is why Islam asks Muslims to educate their daughters. Education has been made mandatory for all men and women and there is no restriction of age. From a social perspective, it becomes even more necessary for a woman to get the education as she is responsible for the grooming of children. An educated woman can bring up her kids in a better way. It is a noble contribution to the society as well.

Duties of Women:

Some important duties of women in an Islamic state are discussed as under:

Observation of Religious Obligations

A woman must observe the religious obligations because this is the way to guide her children as well. When the kids see their mother offering prayers, reciting the Holy Quran and fulfilling other religious obligations, they also start to follow their mother. A mother is the greatest source of motivation for her kids.

Chastity

This is the responsibility of every mother, sister, daughter and wife to maintain their chastity. The men are responsible to protect and guard their women. On the other hand, it is the duty of women to stay away from any kind of activity that might cast a stain on the whole family.

Modest Dressing

This is quite important in an Islamic state that women should wear a modest dress. They should protect their physical appearance and remain in Hijab when going out of the homes. Women must not have any kind of tendency towards men who are not her relatives. In Surah Noorr and Surah Al-Ahzab, women are commanded to veil themselves and guard their modesty as well not to display their hidden beauty to Non-Mehrams.

Faithfulness

It is essential for a woman to remain faithful to her husband. Trust and faith is what keeps the relationship strong. This is, in fact, the foundation of a happy family. A faithful couple is more likely to bring up the kids in a peaceful and welcoming environment.

We see that every aspect of Islamic teachings is a step towards better society. All these elements mentioned above have a strong relationship with the family and culture. Islam is focused on public welfare and this is the duty of every man and woman to follow the footsteps of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
