Islam does not discriminate among the people on the basis of creed or color. It deals all the people as a single unit that could be termed as the institution of humanity. The fundamental unit or base of humanity is associated with the integral social group “family” which is comprised of the parents and the children. The Holy Quran has addressed to the parents and the children frequently in order to show the importance of their rights, duties and status. Quran tutors repeatedly recite the verses from the Holy Quran in order to make us realize the significance of the parents in any society.

A weak family structure results in the failure of the social values and a strong family structure is not possible without giving respect and honor to the parents. Let us discuss some of the most important aspects related to the significance of the parents in the light of the Holy Quran.

Obedience

Holy Quran stresses upon the obedience of the parents and it has been made obligatory for the children to listen, behave and attend to their parents in a respectful manner. Allah does not like disobedience as we can see that Satan was expelled from the heavens just because of disobedience. It was the order from Allah to all the angels and Jins to bow before Adam and Eve. Similarly, Allah asks the children to show respect to the parents and we can imagine that neglecting these commands could make things worse for us.

Role of the Parents

Almighty Allah blesses the parents with the gift in the shape of their kids. Sons and daughters are dearest to each and every couple in this world. If we think in a social perspective, parents play the most important role in education, upbringing, mind setup and overall personality of their kids. It is the duty of the parents to raise up their kids following the ways described by Allah in the Holy Quran. A good and responsible young generation is necessary for the prosperity of any nation. Islam, for the first time made the parents realize the importance of the children in any society. It is the obligation of the parents to educate their kids in the best way prescribed through the Islamic teachings so that the coming generations keep on living a happy and contented life.

“O ye who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is Men and Stones…” (Surah At-Tahreem, Verse 6)

This verse suggests that the parents are responsible to raise their kids in a good manner in order to enable them lead a life according to the Islamic teachings. Allah will award such parents through blessings and will keep them away from the fire of burning Hell.

A Governing Authority

As family is a social institution and is an integral part of any society, the parents serve as the governors of the family. They have the authority to make decisions and are responsible to prepare their kids for the future. Allah will ask about the fulfillment of this responsibility from the parents. It is the duty of the father and the mother to follow the Quranic teachings so that they become a role model for their kids. The basic teaching starts from the house and the personality of each and every kid is influenced by his or her parents. So the parents must remain conscious about this fact and should lead a life that is impressive and motivational for their kids. By impressive life, I mean an impressive conduct both inside and outside of the house which sets an example for the kids.

Status of the Parents

Surah Bani Israeel, Verses 23 and 24 are the best demonstration of the respect that should be given to the parents.

“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor.
And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: “My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was small.”

No writer in the world is able to present such a great words for the parents. Only Allah is able to reflect the status of the parents and these verses are the true example of the Holy Quran respecting the humanity.
